A Van Dusen Mansion Wedding in Minneapolis, MN

Emma and Jacob’s Van Dusen Mansion wedding felt like a true reflection of who they are together. They’re both originally from the Twin Cities, but recently made the move to Chicago for Jacob’s first year of medical residency at Northwestern. Somewhere between packing boxes and starting a whole new chapter, they also managed to build a relationship rooted in art, classical music, history, and a genuine love of experiencing the world together.

That shared curiosity naturally led them to The Van Dusen Mansion. Its historic elegance felt like a collaborator. Even with an unseasonably warm November day hovering around 60 degrees (truly unhinged Midwest behavior), they stuck with their original plan and held the ceremony inside the ballroom.

Documentary Photography at Their Van Dusen Mansion Wedding

Emma found me through Instagram and pretty much nailed her vision from the jump. She wanted photos that were candid, emotional, and real enough to knock the wind out of you ten years from now.

This is where documentary photography really shows its worth. The focus wasn’t on directing every second, but on paying attention. Quiet moments while getting ready. The way Jacob grounded himself before the ceremony. Side glances, deep breaths, subtle hand squeezes. All the small stuff that usually gets overlooked, but is actually the whole damn point.

When things mattered, like timing, light, or keeping the day moving, I stepped in. When they didn’t, I backed off. That balance is everything.

An Unscripted Piano Piece by the Groom

During cocktail hour, Jacob sat down at the piano and played a piece for Emma. The room stilled. Emma listened. Guests quietly gathered. It was one of those moments that can’t be recreated. This was the heartbeat of the day.

That moment summed everything up. This was all about memories, and about letting the day unfold without forcing it into a mold. These are the days that feel just as real years later as they did in the moment.
