I’ve photographed quite a few City Hall weddings over the years, but I can confidently say this Minneapolis City Hall wedding takes the prize for “most likely to become a movie plot.”
When Thomas and Ellie first reached out, they told me they had found me on Google (which honestly never stops being exciting). They connected with the vibe of my work and loved that I already had experience photographing weddings at Minneapolis City Hall. As someone who spends way too much time making sure my website is actually helpful for couples planning small weddings and elopements, hearing that always makes me do a little happy dance.
They weren’t looking for a huge wedding day production. After dating for ten years, they knew exactly what they wanted. No giant guest list, months of stressful planning, or spending a ridiculous amount of money on things they didn’t care about. Instead, they decided to get married on their 10th dating anniversary in one of the most beautiful buildings in Minneapolis. That’s pretty dang romantic.
We spent the start of the day wandering through Minneapolis City Hall for portraits, taking advantage of all the beautiful architecture and historic details that make it one of my favorite spots for intimate weddings. The whole day felt calm and relaxed. At least, that’s how it started.

After portraits, we headed over to wait for the ceremony. I had warned them that judges occasionally run a few minutes behind schedule, so when the ceremony time came and went, nobody was too concerned.
Then fifteen minutes passed. Then twenty. And thirty. At that point, we were all wondering if the judge was coming at all. Because Thomas and Ellie were getting married on their actual anniversary, waiting until another day wasn’t something they wanted to do. So everyone immediately went into problem-solving mode.
We started asking literally anyone we could find if they happened to be ordained. I posted on Instagram looking for help. My friend Steph from SERCE immediately offered to come save the day if needed, though it would take her about thirty minutes to get there.
Then one of the most unexpected things happened. A guy overheard what was going on and offered to check with a friend he knew in the city clerk’s office who happened to be ordained. A little while later, he came back with the clerk, ready to perform the ceremony. Problem solved. Mostly.

Once the ceremony was finished, we hit one final obstacle: witnesses.
The clerk informed us that I couldn’t sign as a witness. So Thomas and Ellie needed two others to sign their marriage license. Thankfully, two people who happened to be in the rotunda stepped up and helped make it official.
Just like that, Thomas and Ellie were married.
What could have been an incredibly stressful situation turned into one of the coolest reminders I’ve seen of how people show up for each other. A stranger found an officiant. Two strangers became witnesses. Friends and vendors offered help. Everyone worked together to make sure these two got married on the exact day they had dreamed about.
“Thank you so much for today! Ellie and I had so much fun!!! Your calming presence and your effort to get us married really helped with our chaotic 45 minutes. You made today even more fun for us. Thank you so much!!!!”
As a photographer, my job is obviously to document the day. But sometimes it’s also helping people navigate the unexpected. And this wedding was a perfect reminder that even when things go completely off-script, the best stories usually come from the chaos. Thomas and Ellie, thank you for trusting me with your day. Your Minneapolis City Hall wedding is one I’ll never forget.
