I can confidently say this wedding happened because I broke one of my own rules. I almost never comment on Facebook posts that say, “Looking for a photographer.” There are usually hundreds of comments, and honestly, it just isn’t my thing. But when I came across Victoria and Evan’s post, something felt different. Instead of trying to sell myself, I linked them to another private estate wedding I’d photographed with a similar vibe. I figured if nothing else, it’d give them some inspiration.
A few days later, they reached out. Looking back now, I’m so glad I hit “comment.”
Their day was intimate, intentional, incredibly personal, and one of those weddings that reminds me why I’ve been loving private estate celebrations so much lately. Every decision felt like it reflected who they are instead of what weddings are “supposed” to look like, and honestly? That’s the good stuff.

Victoria and Evan got married at a stunning home on Summit Avenue in St. Paul, and it couldn’t have been a better backdrop for the kind of day they envisioned.
They’re the type of couple who genuinely love being home together. They have three cats, Olivia, Omelette, and Pretzel, who are basically family. Victoria works full-time in advertising, teaches yoga on the side, and described herself as someone who’s “32 going on 82,” which honestly made perfect sense after spending the day with them. Cozy vibes weren’t just part of the aesthetic; they’re part of who they are.
You could see little nods to their cats throughout the wedding, which made me smile every time I noticed another one. The entire wedding was DIY, too. And before you picture folding chairs and last-minute centerpieces, let me stop you right there. Victoria clearly poured an unbelievable amount of thought into every single detail. The tablescapes looked incredible. Every place setting, candle, flower, and decorative piece felt purposeful without looking overly styled. That’s honestly one of the hardest balances to pull off with DIY weddings, and they absolutely nailed it.
Lately I’ve realized these giant historic homes are becoming some of my favorite places to photograph intimate weddings. They have character before you even add flowers, they photograph beautifully in every room, and they naturally encourage people to slow down.

Minnesota decided to remind everyone that May can still be…rude. It was cold and windy, with rain sprinkled throughout the day, so after dinner everyone moved inside the house. Instead of stressing over what changed, Victoria and Evan rolled with it. Their first dance happened right in the grand foyer beneath the gorgeous woodwork of the home, and honestly, I don’t think the weather took anything away from the moment.
One of my favorite parts of photographing weddings is watching couples adapt when things don’t go exactly according to plan. The couples who stay present almost always end up having the best days because they’re focused on each other rather than the schedule.
Then came my favorite surprise of the entire day. Once the first dance was finished and I was wrapping things up, they disappeared for a few minutes. When they came back downstairs…they’d changed into matching sweatshirts! Their plan for the rest of the night wasn’t a giant dance party. They were going to curl up in the massive living room with their closest friends and family for a movie night.
Tell me that’s not the most cozy, relaxed, and completely unbothered ending imaginable.

One of the biggest takeaways from this day wasn’t about the beautiful house, the thoughtful DIY details, or even the unexpected rain. It was how incredibly comfortable Victoria and Evan looked.
They built a wedding around the life they already love—cozy nights at home, meaningful conversations, beautiful design, and the people who matter most. Every part of the day reflected that, from the cat-themed details to ending the evening in sweatpants watching movies.
A few weeks later, they sent me this message:
“Maddi!! These are truly so incredible. You captured our day in the most authentic way possible. We just spent time going through them together giggly and reminiscing on these special moments. We are so beyond grateful to have had you a part of our day. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!”
Messages like that will never get old.
They’re also a reminder that the best wedding photos happen because people feel safe enough to be themselves.
So if you’re planning an intimate wedding at a private home, historic estate, family property, or anywhere that already feels like your place, just know those are the kinds of celebrations I’ll always get excited about. They leave room for real moments, little surprises, and the stories you’ll actually be telling years from now. And if that means ending your wedding in sweatpants with your favorite people and a movie queued up? I fully support it.
